Point Values for Common Violations

1 of 11
What is the typical point range for a minor speeding violation, such as driving \(1\)-\(15\) mph over the speed limit?
This generally results in a low point value, typically between \(1\) and \(3\) points, depending on state laws.
How many points are typically assigned for running a stop sign or a red light?
This is considered a more significant safety risk and usually carries a moderate point value, often \(3\) or \(4\) points.
What is the point consequence for reckless driving?
Reckless driving is a very serious offense. It carries a high point value, often ranging from \(4\) to \(8\) points, and can lead to immediate license suspension in some cases.
How many points are usually assigned for passing a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing?
This is one of the most severely penalized moving violations due to the danger to children. It typically results in a high number of points (e.g., \(4\) to \(6\) points) and a substantial fine.
What is the point penalty for following too closely, also known as "tailgating"?
Tailgating is a common cause of rear-end collisions and usually results in a moderate point assignment, typically between \(2\) and \(4\) points.
How are points typically handled for an at-fault accident?
If a driver is found to be at fault for an accident and was cited for a moving violation, points for that violation will be added to their record. Some states add separate points just for being at-fault.
What is the point value for an illegal U-turn or improper turn?
These violations are usually considered minor to moderate and often carry a penalty of \(2\) or \(3\) points.
How many points are associated with a conviction for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) or Driving While Intoxicated (DWI)?
While a DUI/DWI conviction often results in mandatory license revocation, it also carries the highest point values if a state uses points for it, sometimes \(6\) to \(12\) points.
How many points are given for using a cell phone while driving (in states where it's a moving violation)?
This varies greatly. Some states treat it as a zero-point offense for a first infraction, while others may assign \(1\) to \(5\) points, with higher points for texting than for talking.
What happens to the license of a commercial driver (CDL holder) convicted of a serious offense?
CDL holders are held to a much stricter standard. Serious violations can lead to disqualification of their CDL for a year or even a lifetime, even if the violation occurred in their personal vehicle.
Are point values different for novice drivers or drivers under \(18\)?
Yes. While the point value for a specific offense is the same, the threshold for suspension is much lower. A young driver may be suspended for accumulating just \(6\) points, whereas an adult might need \(12\).
