Managing Points and Special Cases

1 of 8
What is the most common way a driver can reduce the number of points on their record?
By voluntarily and successfully completing a state-approved defensive driving or traffic school course. This may either remove points from a recent violation or provide a "credit" against future points.
Are there limits on using traffic school to remove points?
Yes. States typically limit how often you can take the course for point reduction (e.g., once every \(12\) or \(18\) months). It's also usually only available for minor moving violations and not for serious offenses.
What is the Driver License Compact (DLC)?
An interstate agreement where member states agree to share driver violation information with one another. This means a conviction in one member state is reported to the driver's home state.
How do point system rules for drivers under age \(18\) differ from those for adults?
The rules are much stricter. The point threshold for suspension is significantly lower (e.g., \(6\) points instead of \(12\)), and a single serious violation can trigger a long suspension.
What is an SR-22 form?
An SR-22 is a certificate of financial responsibility. It's a form filed by an insurance company with the DMV that proves a driver has the state's minimum required liability insurance. It's often required for high-risk drivers or to reinstate a suspended license.
If you pay the fine for a traffic ticket, does that prevent points from being added to your record?
No. Paying the fine is legally considered an admission of guilt (a conviction). The conviction is then reported to the DMV, and the corresponding points are added to your driving record.
How do traffic points affect Commercial Driver's License (CDL) holders differently?
CDL holders are held to a higher standard. Serious violations can result in a CDL disqualification, and even violations in their personal vehicle can impact their commercial license. Their point tolerance is generally lower.
If you fight a ticket in court and lose, what happens?
If the court finds you guilty, you will be convicted of the offense. The court will then notify the DMV, and the points will be added to your record, in addition to any fines or penalties imposed by the court.
