Writing Numerical Expressions

1 of 13
Write an expression for: "the sum of \(8\) and \(7\)"
$$ 8 + 7 $$
Write an expression for: "the difference between \(15\) and \(6\)"
$$ 15 - 6 $$
Write an expression for: "the product of \(9\) and \(5\)"
$$ 9 \times 5 $$
Write an expression for: "the quotient of \(45\) and \(9\)"
$$ 45 \div 9 $$
Write an expression for: "subtract \(4\) from \(12\)"
$$ 12 - 4 $$
Write an expression for: "\(20\) divided by \(5\)"
$$ 20 \div 5 $$
Write an expression for: "add \(6\) to the product of \(3\) and \(7\)"
The product is found first, so the expression is: $$ (3 \times 7) + 6 $$ or simply $$ 3 \times 7 + 6 $$
Write an expression for: "multiply the sum of \(4\) and \(2\) by \(8\)"
The sum must be found first, so you need parentheses: $$ (4 + 2) \times 8 $$
Write an expression for: "subtract \(10\) from the quotient of \(50\) and \(5\)"
The quotient is found first: $$ (50 \div 5) - 10 $$
Write an expression for: "divide \(24\) by the difference of \(10\) and \(4\)"
The difference must be found first, so use parentheses: $$ 24 \div (10 - 4) $$
Write an expression for: "twice the sum of \(9\) and \(1\)"
'Twice' means to multiply by \(2\). The sum is done first: $$ 2 \times (9 + 1) $$
Write an expression for: "half of the difference between \(20\) and \(10\)"
'Half of' means to divide by \(2\). The difference is done first: $$ (20 - 10) \div 2 $$
Write an expression for: "the sum of \(5\) times \(2\) and \(3\) times \(4\)"
This involves two separate products that are then added: $$ (5 \times 2) + (3 \times 4) $$
