What does 'division' mean in math?

Division is a way of sharing a quantity into equal groups. It helps you find out either how many items are in each group, or how many equal groups you can create.

What are the two main ways to think about division?

1. Sharing (Partitive): Splitting a total into a known number of equal groups. (e.g., share 12 cookies among 3 friends). 2. Grouping (Quotative): Finding how many equal groups of a certain size you can make. (e.g., how many groups of 3 can you make from 12?)

If you have \(12\) cookies to share equally among \(4\) friends, how do you find out how many cookies each friend gets?

You use division. The problem is \(12 \div 4 = 3\). Each friend gets \(3\) cookies.

What does the division problem \(10 \div 2\) ask?

It can ask one of two things: 1. "If you split \(10\) into \(2\) equal groups, how many are in each group?" 2. "How many groups of \(2\) can you make from \(10\)?" The answer to both is \(5\).

What are the common symbols used for division?

The most common symbol is the division sign (\(\div\)). You will also see a forward slash (\(/\)).

You have \(15\) stickers and want to put \(5\) stickers on each page of a book. How do you find out how many pages you will use?

You divide the total number of stickers by the number of stickers per page: \(15 \div 5 = 3\). You will use \(3\) pages.

How can you use drawing to solve \(8 \div 4\)?

Draw \(8\) objects (like circles or stars). Then, circle groups of \(4\). Count how many groups you made. You will have \(2\) groups, so \(8 \div 4 = 2\).

A pizza is cut into \(8\) slices. If \(4\) friends want to share it equally, how many slices does each friend get?

Each friend gets \(2\) slices. The division problem is \(8 \div 4 = 2\).
