It helps you see the numbers and count backward. You find the first number, then jump to the left to subtract.

To solve $$7 - 4$$ on a number line, where do you start and which way do you move?

You start at the number $7$ and make $4$ jumps to the left (backward).

If you start at $7$ and jump back $4$ spaces on a number line, where do you land?

You land on $3$. So, $7 - 4 = 3$.
