Visualizing Subtraction on a Number Line

1 of 8
How can a number line help you solve a subtraction problem?
It helps you see the numbers and count backward. You find the first number, then jump to the left to subtract.
To solve $$7 - 4$$ on a number line, where do you start and which way do you move?
You start at the number \(7\) and make \(4\) jumps to the left (backward).
If you start at \(7\) and jump back \(4\) spaces on a number line, where do you land?
You land on \(3\). So, \(7 - 4 = 3\).
Use a number line in your mind to solve: $$10 - 2 = ?$$
Start at \(10\) and jump back \(2\) spaces. You land on \(8\).
Use a number line in your mind to solve: $$5 - 5 = ?$$
Start at \(5\) and jump back \(5\) spaces. You land on \(0\).
Use a number line in your mind to solve: $$9 - 5 = ?$$
$$4$$
Use a number line in your mind to solve: $$6 - 1 = ?$$
$$5$$
Use a number line in your mind to solve: $$8 - 4 = ?$$
$$4$$
