The 'whole' is the total amount. It's the biggest number in the problem and is what you get when you combine all the parts.
In a part-part-whole model, what are the 'parts'?
The 'parts' are the smaller numbers that add up to make the whole. A problem can have two or more parts.
If you know both parts (e.g., \(5\) apples and \(6\) oranges), what operation do you use to find the whole?
Addition. You add the parts together. \(Part + Part = Whole\). So, \(5 + 6 = 11\) total fruits.
If you know the whole and one part (e.g., \(10\) total toys, \(4\) are cars), what operation do you use to find the other part?
Subtraction. You subtract the known part from the whole. \(Whole - Part = Missing Part\). So, \(10 - 4 = 6\) other toys.
There are \(14\) students on the playground. \(8\) are on the swings and the rest are on the slide. How many are on the slide?
The whole is \(14\) students. One part is \(8\). To find the other part, you subtract: \(14 - 8 = 6\). There are \(6\) students on the slide.
Emily buys \(10\) more stickers and now has \(25\). How many did she start with? (Is \(25\) a part or the whole?)
The whole is \(25\) stickers (her total now). One part is the \(10\) she bought. To find the starting part, subtract: \(25 - 10 = 15\). She started with \(15\) stickers.
A fruit bowl has \(6\) apples and \(5\) bananas. How many pieces of fruit are in the bowl? (Are you looking for a part or the whole?)
You are looking for the whole. The parts are \(6\) apples and \(5\) bananas. You add the parts: \(6 + 5 = 11\). There are \(11\) pieces of fruit.
Alex has a collection of \(42\) toy cars. \(18\) are red and the rest are blue. How many blue cars does he have?
The whole is \(42\) cars. The known part is \(18\) red cars. Find the missing part (blue cars) by subtracting: \(42 - 18 = 24\). He has \(24\) blue cars.
A pet store has a total of \(30\) puppies and kittens. If there are \(12\) puppies, how many kittens are there?
The whole is \(30\) animals. One part is \(12\) puppies. To find the other part (kittens), you subtract: \(30 - 12 = 18\). There are \(18\) kittens.
Ken built a tower with \(27\) blue blocks and \(33\) yellow blocks. How tall is the tower in total blocks?
You know the two parts (blue and yellow blocks). To find the whole (total height), you add them: \(27 + 33 = 60\). The tower is \(60\) blocks tall.
