Build on your rounding skills by learning to round three-digit numbers to the nearest hundred. This stack focuses on identifying the correct place value and applying rounding rules to larger numbers.
When rounding to the nearest hundred, what place value do you look at to make your decision?
You look at the digit in the tens place.
What is the rule for rounding to the nearest hundred?
If the tens digit is \(5\) or more (meaning \(50\) or greater), you round up to the next hundred. If it's \(4\) or less (meaning \(49\) or less), you round down.
Round the number \(276\) to the nearest hundred.
Look at the tens digit, which is \(7\). Since \(7\) is \(5\) or more, you round up. \(276\) rounds to \(300\).
Round the number \(431\) to the nearest hundred.
Look at the tens digit, which is \(3\). Since \(3\) is \(4\) or less, you round down. \(431\) rounds to \(400\).
Round the number \(850\) to the nearest hundred.
Look at the tens digit, which is \(5\). The rule is to round up if the digit is \(5\) or more. \(850\) rounds to \(900\).
What are the two hundreds that the number \(682\) is between?
It is between \(600\) and \(700\).
Is \(682\) closer to \(600\) or \(700\)?
It is closer to \(700\). That's why it rounds up to \(700\).
Round \(149\) to the nearest hundred.
The tens digit is \(4\), so you round down. \(149\) rounds to \(100\).
Round \(989\) to the nearest hundred.
The tens digit is \(8\), so you round up. \(989\) rounds to \(1000\).
Round \(555\) to the nearest hundred.
The tens digit is \(5\), so you round up. \(555\) rounds to \(600\).
Round \(708\) to the nearest hundred.
The tens digit is \(0\), which is less than \(4\), so you round down. \(708\) rounds to \(700\).
