Introduction to Matrices and Dimensions

1 of 10
What is a matrix?
A matrix is a rectangular array or grid of numbers, symbols, or expressions, arranged in rows and columns. It's a way to organize and manipulate data in a structured format.
How are the dimensions of a matrix described?
The dimensions, or size, of a matrix are described by the number of rows followed by the number of columns. This is written as \(m \times n\), where \(m\) is the number of rows and \(n\) is the number of columns.
What are the dimensions of the matrix \(A = \begin{pmatrix} 5 & 8 & -1 \\ 2 & 0 & 4 \end{pmatrix}\)?
The matrix \(A\) has \(2\) rows and \(3\) columns, so its dimensions are \(2 \times 3\).
What does the element notation \(a_{ij}\) represent in a matrix \(A\)?
The notation \(a_{ij}\) represents the element located in the \(i\)-th row and the \(j\)-th column of the matrix \(A\). The first subscript always indicates the row, and the second indicates the column.
Given the matrix \(B = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 2 & 3 \\ 4 & 5 & 6 \\ 7 & 8 & 9 \end{pmatrix}\), what is the element \(b_{23}\)?
The element \(b_{23}\) is in the 2nd row and 3rd column, which is the number \(6\).
What is a square matrix?
A square matrix is a matrix that has the same number of rows as columns. Its dimensions are \(n \times n\).
What is a row matrix (or row vector)?
A row matrix is a matrix that has only one row. Its dimensions are \(1 \times n\) for some \(n > 0\).
What is a column matrix (or column vector)?
A column matrix is a matrix that has only one column. Its dimensions are \(m \times 1\) for some \(m > 0\).
When are two matrices considered equal?
Two matrices are equal if and only if they have the same dimensions and their corresponding elements are identical. For matrices \(A\) and \(B\), \(A = B\) if \(a_{ij} = b_{ij}\) for all \(i\) and \(j\).
Are matrices \(A = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 2 \\ 3 & 4 \end{pmatrix}\) and \(B = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 3 \\ 2 & 4 \end{pmatrix}\) equal?
No. Although they have the same dimensions and contain the same numbers, the elements at corresponding positions are not all equal. For example, \(a_{12} = 2\) while \(b_{12} = 3\).
