Foundations of Differential Equations

1 of 9
What is a differential equation?
An equation that contains an unknown function and one or more of its derivatives. For example, \(\frac{dy}{dx} = 2x\) is a differential equation where \(y\) is an unknown function of \(x\).
What is the 'order' of a differential equation?
The order of the highest derivative present in the equation. For example, \(y'' + 2y' + y = 0\) is a second-order differential equation because the highest derivative is the second derivative (\(y''\)).
What is a 'solution' to a differential equation?
A function that, when substituted for the unknown function in the equation, produces a true statement. For example, \(y = x^3\) is a solution to \(\frac{dy}{dx} = 3x^2\) because the derivative of \(x^3\) is \(3x^2\).
How do you verify if a function, like \(y = e^{-2x}\), is a solution to the differential equation \(y' + 2y = 0\)?
First, find the derivative of the function: \(y' = -2e^{-2x}\). Then, substitute both \(y\) and \(y'\) into the equation: \((-2e^{-2x}) + 2(e^{-2x}) = 0\). Since \(0 = 0\) is true, the function is a solution.
What distinguishes a 'general solution' from a 'particular solution' of a differential equation?
A general solution includes an arbitrary constant of integration (e.g., \(C\)) and represents a family of functions. A particular solution is derived from the general solution by using an initial condition to find a specific value for the constant \(C\).
What is the general solution to the differential equation \(\frac{dy}{dx} = 5\)?
By integrating with respect to \(x\), we get \(y = \int 5 \, dx = 5x + C\). This represents a family of lines with a slope of \(5\).
What is an 'initial condition' and what is its purpose?
An initial condition is a specified value of the solution at a particular point, often written as \(y(x_0) = y_0\). Its purpose is to select a single curve (a particular solution) from the family of curves represented by the general solution.
Given the general solution \(y = x^2 + C\), find the particular solution that satisfies the initial condition \(y(1) = 3\).
Substitute \(x=1\) and \(y=3\) into the general solution: \(3 = (1)^2 + C\). Solving for \(C\) gives \(C = 2\). The particular solution is \(y = x^2 + 2\).
Is \(\frac{d^2y}{dt^2} + t^2 \frac{dy}{dt} = 4y\) a differential equation? If so, what is its order?
Yes, it is a differential equation. Its order is \(2\), because the highest derivative is the second derivative, \(\frac{d^2y}{dt^2}\).
