Defrosters and Full Visibility

1 of 11
What is the difference between a vehicle's 'defrost' and 'defog' functions?
'Defrost' melts ice or frost from the *outside* of the windshield using hot air. 'Defog' clears condensation (fog) from the *inside* of windows. The same climate control setting often performs both.
To clear a fogged-up windshield on a cool, damp day, what combination of controls is most effective?
Turn the temperature to hot, select the defrost setting to direct air to the windshield, and turn on the air conditioning (A/C). The A/C acts as a dehumidifier, removing moisture from the air.
How can you quickly defog the inside of your windows in the winter?
Turn the heat to its highest setting, direct it to the windows using the defrost mode, and slightly open a side window to let the moist air escape.
Why is it important to regularly clean the inside of your car's windows?
Dirt, dust, and oily films on the inside of the glass cause light to scatter, which increases glare at night. This film also gives moisture a surface to cling to, causing windows to fog up faster.
When driving into direct, bright sunlight, what safety accessory should you use first?
Immediately use your car's sun visor. Position it to block the sun's glare without obstructing your essential view of the road ahead.
Is the rear defroster effective at melting heavy snow or ice?
It is designed for thin layers of frost, ice, and condensation. For heavy accumulation, clear the snow and ice manually first to avoid overloading the system and to clear your view faster.
What should you do if visibility is so poor that your wipers and defrosters aren't helping enough?
If you cannot see the road and your surroundings clearly, the safest action is to pull over to a safe location, stop, and activate your emergency flashers (hazard lights) until conditions improve.
How does using the 'recirculate air' button affect window fogging?
Using the recirculate air function traps moisture inside the cabin, causing windows to fog up faster. To prevent fogging, use the fresh air setting to draw in drier, outside air.
Is it legal to drive with a snow-covered or frosted-over rear window?
No. In most jurisdictions, you are legally required to have a clear view out of all your vehicle's windows, including the sides and rear. You must clear all snow and ice before driving.
What might cause a car's defroster to blow cold air when the heat is on?
This often indicates a problem with the vehicle's cooling and heating system, such as low engine coolant, a faulty thermostat, or a blocked heater core.

What is the purpose of the dashboard button with a rectangle and three wavy arrows?
This button activates the rear window defroster. It heats thin electrical lines embedded in the glass to clear away frost, ice, or condensation from the rear windshield.
