Deciphering Line Graphs

1 of 14
What is the primary purpose of a line graph?
A line graph is used to visualize how a variable changes over a continuous period of time or another continuous scale. It is excellent for showing trends, acceleration, and deceleration.
On a line graph, what does an upward sloping line from left to right indicate?
An upward slope indicates a positive trend, or an increase in the value of the variable on the y-axis as the variable on the x-axis increases.
What does a steep slope on a line graph signify, compared to a gentle slope?
A steeper slope signifies a faster rate of change (a more rapid increase or decrease). A gentler slope signifies a slower rate of change.
What does a horizontal line on a line graph mean?
A horizontal line (slope of zero) indicates a period of no change. The value of the y-axis variable remains constant while the x-axis variable progresses.
What is the significance of the point where two lines on a graph intersect?
The intersection point is where the two quantities being measured are equal. Before the intersection, one was greater; after the intersection, the other is greater.
A question asks for the period of the 'greatest increase'. What should you look for on the line graph?
Look for the segment of the line that has the steepest positive (upward) slope. This represents the fastest rate of increase over an interval.
How do you find the approximate value of a data point that falls between two marked intervals on the x-axis?
Locate the point on the line corresponding to that intermediate position on the x-axis, then trace horizontally to the y-axis to estimate its value.
What does a 'peak' or 'maximum' on a line graph represent?
A peak represents the highest point the measured value reached during the observed period. It's a point where the trend changes from increasing to decreasing.
What does a 'trough' or 'minimum' on a line graph represent?
A trough represents the lowest point the measured value reached. It's a point where the trend changes from decreasing to increasing.
How do you calculate the net change between two points in time on a line graph?
Find the value on the y-axis for the later point in time and subtract the value on the y-axis for the earlier point in time. The result is the net change.
If a line graph shows 'Average Annual Temperature (°C)' on the y-axis and 'Year' on the x-axis, what would a downward sloping line mean?
It would mean that the average annual temperature is decreasing over that period of years. This represents a cooling trend.
Can a line on a line graph be vertical?
In most standard line graphs where the x-axis is time, a vertical line is impossible. It would imply that multiple values occurred at the exact same instant in time, which violates the function rule.
How can a legend or key be used in a line graph?
A legend is used to distinguish between multiple lines on the same graph. For example, one line could represent revenue for Product A and another line could represent revenue for Product B, each with a different color or pattern.
A question asks for the 'rate of change' between Year \(1\) and Year \(3\). What formula should you use?
Rate of change is 'rise over run'. This question typically asks for the average rate of change over the interval. Use the formula:$$\frac{\text{Value at Year 3} - \text{Value at Year 1}}{3 - 1}$$
