Adjusting Speed for Conditions

1 of 10
As a rule of thumb, how should you adjust your speed on a wet road?
As a general rule, reduce your speed by about one-third on wet roads. For example, in a \(60\) mph zone, drive at \(40\) mph. Wet roads increase stopping distance and the risk of hydroplaning.
How should you adjust your speed when driving on a road covered in packed snow?
Reduce your speed by at least half (\(50\%\)). For example, if the speed limit is \(50\) mph, you should not exceed \(25\) mph.
If a road is icy, what is the safest way to manage your speed?
Slow down to a crawl, far below the posted speed limit. If possible, avoid driving on ice altogether. Gentle acceleration and braking are critical.
When driving in heavy traffic, what is the safest speed to travel?
The speed of the other vehicles around you (the "flow of traffic"), as long as it does not exceed the maximum posted speed limit.
How should you adjust your speed when approaching a sharp curve in the road?
Slow down before you enter the curve. Applying brakes while turning can cause your vehicle to skid. Obey any advisory speed signs.
What is the rule for safe speed when driving at night?
Never "overdrive" your headlights. You must drive slowly enough to be able to stop within the distance you can see illuminated by your headlights.
When driving in heavy fog or rain that limits visibility, which headlights should you use?
Use your low-beam headlights. High beams will reflect off the fog or rain, creating glare and reducing your visibility even further.
Why must you slow down when driving on a gravel road or a paved road with loose debris?
You must slow down because loose surfaces like gravel and dirt significantly reduce the traction between your tires and the road, making it easier to skid.
Why is it important to reduce speed when approaching the crest of a hill?
Your visibility is severely limited. You cannot see what is on the other side of the hill, such as a stopped vehicle, a pedestrian, or another hazard.
Orange road work signs featuring a diamond warning sign with a worker shoveling and a rectangular sign reading "WORK ZONE SPEED LIMIT 45 FINES DOUBLE," indicating reduced regulatory limits and increased penalties in construction areas.
What is the rule regarding speed limits in a posted construction or work zone?
You must obey the specific speed limit posted for the work zone. Be aware that fines for speeding in these zones are often doubled to protect workers.
