Remember, the '5' in $52$ really means $50$. When you add the tens digits $5+3=8$, what does that $8$ represent in the answer?

It represents $8$ tens, or $80$.

In the problem $71 + 25$, what is the second addition step?

Add the tens: $7 + 2 = 9$.
